Variety in training is 100% necessary for (most) of us.
Yes, robots are out there who can do the same thing 4-5 days a week for 40 years (NOT ME)
The best athletes I’m around and most of the guys who have been doing this for a decade or 2+ are changing it up. Keeping the routines spicy.
This might look like:
In the gym for 5-6 years strength training…. Switch over to couple days at gym and more running
OR
Cardio king for 5-6 years… Switch to strength training
OR
Basic gym bro for 5-6 years… Picks up elk hunting and starts rucking more often
OR
Strength train all winter…. Summer sports all summer (trail run, kayak, paddle board, body weight. Etc)
Give yourself permission to break the mold!
I know, I know, I know… when you are peaking in any one area (Strength or cardio) it’s hard to give up those top end gainz. When you take the variety approach you may lose some top end strength or size. You may lose some of that top end mile speed if you start putting on some strength and size. You may lose a little bit of definition if you adjust your training from strength gym bro to ‘gym and adventure’ bro. BUT, if it keeps you in the game FOR LIFE then it is well worth it.
DO HARD THINGS
Before you quit it… pivot!
