Getting creative with my cardio as summer is fast approaching. Love this time of year for getting outside all day. I’m moving a ton and using my lifestyle as a form of “cardio” especially for these endurance races. Much of the long distance endurance game includes WALKING. With that being said… being able to stay on the feet the longest, while moving forward is the way to the finish line. My goal in Sept. is to run a PR distance in the backyard ultra marathon. That be 71+ Mile!
Training From The Other Day
-We started the day with a 1.5 mile family walk around the neighborhood. I wore my earth runners. These are the most minimalistic shoes available. I’m leaveraging these to STRENGTHEN my feet on family walks.
-Following - my son Ambrose went down for a nap. My wife, Crew and I hit the driveway for a workout in the sun. I did 2 miles on the echo bike <super set> with .5 miles of running. I did muliple rounds till finishing at 10 miles on echo bike and 2 miles of total running.
-After… we had lunch. Then my
and Crew went to garage sales-While these was out and about I threw Ambrose up in his hiking bag and rucked him 4.5+ miles down to the local park. This is GREAT training for the ultra*
-After… Ambrose went back down for his afternoon nap. Ash stayed back with him while I went to the lake and Paddleboarded with
for the afternoon. We didn’t use this much as a workout. Rather, a time to hangout in the sun, drink a few beers and be out on the lake. But none the less there was some activity involved.-After… I got home to hang with the family. We chilled in the front yard before putting Ambrose to bed.
I finished the day around 25,000 steps. 2 mile of running, 4.5 mile of rucking with 35+ lbs (Ambrose, water and his pack) couple miles of paddle boarding and 1.5+ miles of family walks with the minimalistic shoes/sandals.
Thats a full Saturday! A fun one too. I’ll spend a lot of my summer days this way over the next few months. All the activity I enjoy and with a bit of intention around my training I’ll be able to put myself in a good position to set a RUN PR come this Sept.
Getting creative with cardio like this has lead to more adventuring with my family + more “fuller days” on the weekends doing things OUTSIDE of the house. I think there’s nothing better than being able to do fitness while enjoying family time and being outside.
