Changing with seasons. The seasons of life but also the seasons of nature.
The winter months (Dec. Jan. Feb.) are much of hunkering down in the home. I spend hours and hours sitting in front of the fire reading and writing. Waking up before 5 a.m and getting the coffee going. Most of my fitness is done at the gym where it is warm. I’ll go to LA fitness more often because the size of the building/ space is nice when I’m spending most of the time at the home. I do my best to get outside for a walk, run or hike daily— but not much outdoor activity for fitness. I will do nearly all my work calls while walking (as long as the wind isn’t too bad… I’m still on the corded headphones haha) I’ll try to sneak off to FL to see my Momma and get some sunshine. This helps boost the mood from the long dark days of winter.
Spring and Summer couldn’t be any more different. I’m hardly ever in the home. I sleep in on more days and stay up later as well. It’s light out till nearly 10 here in Indy. My wife and I love to hangout after the kids are put down. We have a great pond that sits less than 50 yards from the house that we like to look at—and that I like to fish. Not catching many big ones but I caught 9 in less than an hour the other day. Thats fun! I spend allllll my time outside. As I write this email I am sitting at a local park drinking my coffee out of Stanley Thermos. My wife and son are on a stroller walk. They’ll be down to see me in the next hour or so. This local park is only a mile from the house. It’s vibrant with trees, a crick, kids always swimming in the crick, people fishing, baseball fields and people taking walks. We love it* I’ll do ALL of my calls outside in the summer. Shirt off catching a tan. Often at that local park I just mentioned. I do ALL my workouts outside. I haven’t been to the gym in MONTHS (and I even own one) I train from the driveway and the garage. Gotta small set up with dumbbell, pull up and dip bar, bands, echo bike and a few other random things to lift. I do a lot of walking, running and biking. I’ll get out on the water to kayak or paddle board every few weeks… (now that I mention this… I’m way overdue) We have another great park thats just 10 mins from the home that I can paddle board on. Great park— over 20+ miles of hiking trails. We spend a lot of time in our RV. Over 5 weeks so far this year and another 4 weeks planned. Mostly going local (within an hour) due to little mans sports and ease. We had one trip to hocking hills (which is a gem in Ohio) about 4-5 hours away. And we are going up to Michigan in a few weeks which will also be a 5+ hour trip. For us it’s less about traveling the Untied States in an RV and more about plucking ourself out of our day to day and into nature and the camping vibes that we love so much at campgrounds.

Fall is coming…. Right around the corner! We like fall a lot. Little man plays QB for the local football team. (He’s 14) and the highschool just won states in football last year. We live a mile from the highschool (we live right in town) and it’s electric! We get a couple weeks of fall camping in at our favorite spot an hour a way. I run an ultramarathon in September which is an hour a way. It’s at a campsite so we camp for about 10 days for that. We will soak up every single second of summer and fall that we can outdoors. I’ll keep training outside and making most of my workouts with my family or in between Ambroses naps. I’ll do most of my work outside everyday and take every opportunity I can to go fishin for a bit.
It’s okay to change with the seasons… I know fall means winter is coming and much of the things I do outdoors the other 7-9 months I don’t do in the deep winter. Even if I “could” I just don’t. The vibe is different for me — I’ll be in the gym, reading books and hanging by the fire… and that’s great. Where-as in spring-summer I am not in the gym and not reading (nearly as much)… I’m outside exploring and adventuring! Fall time I’ll be split between the two extremes and will be somewhere in the middle. In the gym occasionally while still holding on to the outdoor activities as long as I can. I’ll start reading a bit more and waking up a bit earlier. I’ll start going to bed earlier too. Giving myself permission to change with the seasons feels like a freedom to be authentically me. With a lesser attachment to be “the gym guy” or “the business owner” or “the full time RV-er” or “oh you read everyday” or “oh you wake up at 4:30 a.m everyday” … you get the picture. All of these things make me who I am— but no one thing is entirely who I am.
Do Hard Things
Give Yourself Permission To Change As You Need
This is a great piece. I think about this all the time
Brother, that last paragraph hit HARD! Awesome read (I definitely need to change with the seasons, and get outside more for training).
