Words matter.
Some will say “words don’t matter” I’m reminded of the old gurus teaching. It’ went something like this:
Gather around and let me share with you.
-A large crowd begins to gather…. Sitting at his feet the guru starts to share.
Listen, I tell you the truth, the words you speak to yourself and to others will become the echo of your life!
-The next minute a man in the crowd stands up and says “Guru, words Don’t matter! I’m not affected by any words”
Guru looks out and says- Sit your ass down motherf*cker!
The crowd erupts!
The man says- YOU SPEAK TO ME THIS WAY?! YOU SAY YOU’RE A GURU AND THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT OTHERS?!
Guru says - great apologies, great apologies, please forgive my words. Please, sit back down.
The man accepts his apologies and sits back down.
Guru begins to teach:
ahh, now we see…. It’ only took 5 words to get you up ina fuss. And only a few others to calm you back down. Now you can see, words matter.
Our Words Become the Echo of Our Days.
They bring life or death to our relationships and growth. The words we say to others MATTER. Some people say “I’m just keeping it real” - and usually these people are assholes. Some people say nothing at all, having no backbone to stand up for their values. Which leads to a life of people pleasing and losing the self.
Our Words Matter
What we say to others matters. What we say to ourself matters so much more. I have some friends, good, smart, ambitious men. They say “I’m just really hard on myself” but the reality is they are just really mean to themselves. They punish their mind and heart with words that would cut through another person. They’ll say things to the self that would lead to blows if they said it to another person.
So You May Think That Words Don’t Matter
You may think “sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me” and I wish it were true. But reality is different. We hurt ourself with the words that we use to label ourself: “I’m not smart” “I’m fat” “I’m not good enough” “no one will care” We’ve surely said some things to others (we love) that we wish we could have taken back. (No? Just me?) Our words become our world.
Do Hard Things
Choose Your Words Wisely
One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 4:29 -Let every word out of your mouth build up and encourage (paraphrase).
What I didn't realize is that I also need to apply that verse to the voice in my head.
Thanks for the inspiration to start the week!
