Old freind of mine named Larry (he’s in his 60’s) asked me how to lose weight. (He’s prob 50+lbs overweight)
He said “there’s so many opinions on YouTube and I don’t know who to trust! Every-time I get going I can’t stick to it”
I told him this in November:
-Up your protein (never less then 100g a day)
-Move more. Go to the gym 3-4 days a week.
He asked “do I bench press or squat? What do I do in the gym?”
I said… “don’t worry about it. Walk on the treadmill if you want. Or go do the machines. Take your time but make the exercises feel hard”
Larry came over today (it’s March 9th. About 4 months* since we last chatted) and said:
“Lost 35lbs with your advice and feel great. I stopped eating sweets like those snack cakes because the more I eat protein the less I want that crap.”
Then he went on to say “but you know I still do 1-2 Diet Pepsi a day…”
Glancing at me as if he was waiting for me to scold him. I said “hell yeah, nothing wrong with that. As long as you are feeling better what matters!”
Thoughts
If you’re reading this email and your activity level is at zero this advice would be GREAT for you. There’s a million different opinions online and many people reading this might think “o0o0o0ooooo aspartame” for the Diet Pepsi. Most of these people are completely out of touch with the everyday person. I’ve learned in coaching to meet people exactly where they are at. I met Larry at square one. Other times I meet people who are well advanced in the game (even professional athletes) If I was to give Larry the advice I give a high level athlete, Larry would have felt overwhelmed and failed (like he’s shared with me before) but because I made the process so simple to digest he was able to get started and get results.

I have a buddy who lost 20 pounds switching from coke to coke zero and walking 60 minutes a day
What a great example of how simple solutions can produce dramatic changes objectively and subjectively. Tailored approaches to meet someone where they are. There is no one size fits all solution.
